Field Audit No. 001Independent · not a clientSurprise, AZ

AZ Turn & Burn RC built an RC destination. Search still sees a parts store.

One of the West Valley’s best-reviewed RC shops is winning where it counts: reviews, local rankings, even Google’s AI. But its indoor playground, events and parties, the things no competitor can copy, are nearly invisible to search. Meanwhile the site carries technical weight that slows every visit. Here is everything we found, with receipts, and the 90-day plan we would run.

How to read this. AZ Turn & Burn RC did not commission this audit, did not pay to be featured, and has not reviewed it. Everything comes from public pages, Google, Bing, directories and standard tools on September 21, 2026. Grades are our editorial judgment. Figures are measured, and where we extrapolate from a sample we say so. See Method to check any of it yourself.

01 · Executive summary

A category leader with a visibility gap on its best asset.

Turn & Burn doesn’t need a rescue. It needs its online footprint to catch up with what the business has become.

The verdict

Most shops we audit struggle with reviews and rankings. Turn & Burn has solved the hard part. It holds 402 Google reviews at 4.8★, ranks #1 for seven of the seventeen local searches we tested, and Google AI Mode names it first for the best RC shop in the West Valley.

The gap is what search thinks the business is. Google, Bing and AI assistants describe a hobby store. The sandbox, crawler course, tank arena, monthly competitions and party trailer barely register, so the shop is missing from “things to do” and “where to race” answers that a hobby store alone could never win.

Underneath sit fixable technical problems: a slow mobile homepage, hundreds of empty indexable pages, missing homepage basics, and three different suite numbers.

The three moves that matter most:

  1. Make the playground a first-class entity: GBP categories and hours, Store and Event schema, and pages that answer parents’ and racers’ questions.
  2. Cut the dead weight: hide or merge empty collections and rebuild the mobile hero so the homepage loads in seconds, not eleven.
  3. Make every listing tell the same story: one address, live review numbers, Bing and Apple claimed, and no draft text or unproven claims.

03 · SWOT analysis

Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats.

Every point links back to a measured finding in this audit. Nothing here is a hunch.

SStrengthsInternal

  • Review moat: 4.8★ on 402 Google reviews, nearly double AZRC Hobbies (215) and far ahead of Diamondback RC Park (32). Google’s own review topics lead with “knowledgeable staff” (261 mentions).
  • Organic authority: #1 for “hobby shop surprise az”, “rc hobby shop phoenix”, “rc car repair surprise az”, “rc sandbox arizona” and “rc birthday party surprise az”.
  • A real differentiator: the only West Valley RC shop we found with an indoor sandbox, crawler course and tank arena under the same roof as the store.
  • Named first by Google AI Mode for “best rc hobby shop in the west valley”.
  • Machine-readable catalog: Shopify ships Product + Offer schema on every product and an agent-commerce endpoint, so AI shopping tools can already read price and stock.
  • Active marketing: Google local ads running across the Valley, 3.9K Facebook followers, a city-tourism listing on Explore Surprise.

WWeaknessesInternal

  • Slow mobile homepage: 11.4 s LCP, 5.4 MB, 4,281 DOM elements, Lighthouse performance 47.
  • Index bloat: about half of sampled collections are empty, and 48% of sampled products are out of stock. All are indexable.
  • Homepage basics: the title repeats the brand twice, there is no meta description and no H1.
  • Mixed identity data: Suite 112, 110 and 115 are all published, and a homepage widget still says 4.7★ and 177 reviews.
  • Credibility slips: a copywriting draft line is live on the Indoor Crawling page, the contact email is a Gmail address, and “#1” and “largest” claims are never backed up.
  • Playground is a side note in Google: the listing shows one category and store hours only (the playground runs 12 to 8 PM).

OOpportunitiesExternal

  • “Things to do” demand: Google already groups them with FatCats, Elevate Trampoline Park and Castles N’ Coasters, yet they are absent from the AI answer for indoor kids’ activities in Surprise.
  • Take back the south and west Valley: AZRC Hobbies outranks them in Glendale, Goodyear and Buckeye on Maps with half the reviews. Relevance and prominence work can close that.
  • Events as search assets: ten monthly crawler comps plus Bash Fest can become Event schema, GBP posts and recap pages that rank and get cited.
  • Bing, Apple and Copilot: Bing’s panel shows Yelp’s 28 reviews instead of the 402 on Google, and it floats “Turn And Burn Motors” as a related search. Owning Bing Places and Apple Business Connect sharpens the entity.
  • A newsletter with a built-in calendar: ten monthly crawler comps, Bash Fest and weekly restocks are ready-made reasons to email. Owned email turns one-time playground visitors into regulars and raises what each customer is worth over time.
  • Party and STEM bookings: already #1 for “rc birthday party surprise az”. Packages, pricing and FAQs could turn that into bookings AI can quote.

TThreatsExternal

  • Diamondback RC Park (5.0★, Phoenix) is the venue AI Mode recommends for indoor racing and crawling: carpet track, drift, Mini-Z and a crawl area.
  • AZRC Hobbies (4.8★, Goodyear) wins Maps south of Bell Road and is described by AI as the “go-to hub” along I-10.
  • AI answers flatten the shop into “a hobby store”, so the playground and events never enter the conversation when families or racers ask.
  • Paid clutter on the brand: a Groupon ad sits inside their own Google panel. Hobby Lobby buys the same Maps searches.
  • Name collisions: “Turn and Burn” also names car dealers and a magazine, which confuses entity matching in Bing.

04 · Rankings

01Google Business Profile & MapsLocal SEO, Maps & GBP

F-01

The playground, the newest and most unique part of the business, barely exists in Google

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

Google shows one visible category (Hobby store) and one set of hours (10 AM to 7 PM). The Sandbox & Crawler Playground runs 12 to 8 PM, has its own pricing, and the events page lists it at a different suite (110). Google’s “People also search for” box already lumps the shop in with FatCats, Elevate Trampoline Park and Castles N’ Coasters, so Google has noticed the entertainment angle. The profile just isn’t feeding it.

# Google Business Profile, as shown publicly Category: Hobby store Hours: Mon 10-7 · Tue closed · Wed-Sun 10-7 # /pages/az-turn-and-burn-rc-sandbox-crawler-playground Playground: Mon 12-8 PM · Tue closed · Wed-Sun 12-8 PM
Found on: Google knowledge panel and Maps listing; playground page on azturnandburn.com
FixIn the GBP dashboard, review the secondary categories (for example Amusement center or Indoor playground, if they are not already set; secondary categories are not publicly visible so we could not audit them). Add the playground under “More hours” if the category offers it, and add the passes as Products or Services with prices. If the playground runs as its own suite with its own entrance and staff, check Google’s guidelines on whether it qualifies for a separate listing.
F-02

Maps rank slips to #2 south and west of the store, behind a shop with half the reviews

MediumEffort: MediumImpact: High

We searched “rc hobby shop” on Google Maps with the map centered on seven West Valley points. Turn & Burn is #1 at the store, North Surprise, North Peoria and Sun City. In Glendale, Goodyear and Buckeye it drops to #2 behind AZRC Hobbies (4.8★, 215 reviews). Distance explains part of that, but it also means relevance signals (categories, services, content and reviews that name those cities) aren’t outweighing proximity.

Found on: Google Maps, organic results only (their own sponsored pin appeared above at all seven points)
FixBuild relevance for the south and west Valley: a “Serving Goodyear, Buckeye & Glendale” section on the store page with drive times, GBP posts about Bash Fest in Waddell, and a simple, genuine ask for a Google review after every visit (never asking customers to mention specific details — Google’s review policies don’t allow soliciting particular content). Re-run the same seven-point grid monthly.
F-03

The profile is managed, but its freshest content is borrowed from Facebook

MediumEffort: LowImpact: Medium

The last owner post is from July 8, 2026 (the playground launch). The “Wild West Bash Fest” event in the panel is pulled from Facebook, not posted in GBP. The auto-generated Products carousel shows odd categories such as Books, Video Cameras and Art & Craft Paint instead of what the shop is known for.

FixPost weekly (new arrivals, each monthly crawler comp, Bash Fest countdown). Curate the Products section with 10 to 15 hero items (Traxxas Slash, crawler kits, playground passes) so the carousel reflects the store.

Three different suite numbers, and a review widget stuck at 4.7★ and 177 reviews

HighEffort: LowImpact: Medium

Name, address and phone must match everywhere, because Google and AI systems cross-check them to decide the listings are one business. We found three versions of the address and a homepage widget showing an outdated rating to every visitor.

Ste 112 site location page · Google · Yelp · Apple Maps · Waze · MapQuest Ste 110 events page (playground) · homepage Google-review widget #115 Facebook page # homepage review widget data "address":"12851 W Bell Rd #110" "rating":"4.7" "total_num_of_reviews":177 # live Google profile: 4.8 stars, 402 reviews
FixChoose one official store address (Suite 112 matches Google, so it is the safe choice) and update Facebook and the events page. If the playground really is Suite 110, say “Suite 110, next door to the store in Suite 112” wherever it is mentioned. Re-sync or replace the review widget so it shows live numbers.
F-05

Bing, and by extension Copilot, tells a thinner story

MediumEffort: LowImpact: Medium

Bing’s local panel rates the shop 5/5 from 28 reviews (Yelp’s count, not Google’s 402), uses the About page’s generic intro as its description, and suggests “Turn And Burn Motors” and “Turn N Burn Magazine” as related searches. Microsoft Copilot answers local questions from Bing’s index.

FixClaim or verify Bing Places (it can import the Google profile in minutes) and Apple Business Connect. Use the same description, categories, hours and photos. Add the playground and events to both.

Hundreds of empty and out-of-stock pages are competing for Google’s attention

CriticalEffort: MediumImpact: High

The sitemap lists 1,327 collections and 20,158 products. In a random sample of 80 collections, 38 were empty. Their pages literally say “This collection is empty”, have no noindex tag, and sit in the sitemap. In a random sample of 120 products, 57 (48%) were out of stock. That is thin content at scale, and it dilutes crawl attention away from the pages that sell.

GET /collections/grease-oil → 200, indexable "This collection is empty" GET /collections/motocross → 200, indexable "This collection is empty" GET /collections/cars-trucks-servos → 200, indexable "This collection is empty"
Found on: Random samples drawn from the live sitemap.xml; extrapolating the sample suggests roughly 600 empty collections, which we flag as an estimate
FixDelete or merge empty collections. For ones worth keeping (seasonal, brand), set Shopify’s seo.hidden metafield so they drop out of the sitemap and get a noindex. For out-of-stock products, keep pages that have demand, add a “back in stock” note and related in-stock items, and redirect discontinued items to their parent collection.
F-07

The mobile homepage takes about 11 seconds to show its main image

HighEffort: MediumImpact: High

Three Lighthouse mobile runs gave a median performance score of 47, Largest Contentful Paint of 11.4 s and Total Blocking Time of 820 ms. The page weighs 5.4 MB with 4,281 DOM elements. The biggest element is a 1600-pixel PNG slideshow image. hCaptcha (713 KiB) and Google Tag Manager (471 KiB) also load on the homepage. On desktop, layout shift scores 0.68 (0.1 is “good”).

LCP element <img src="…/Crawling_Series_1600x690.png" alt=""> Weight 5,450 KiB · unused JS 615 KiB · image savings 727 KiB DOM 4,281 elements (mega-menu lists some categories 4×) Third party hCaptcha 713 KiB · GTM 471 KiB · notify-me.io 94 KiB
Found on: Lighthouse 12, mobile emulation, 3 runs (lab data; Google’s field data API was unavailable on the day)
FixServe the hero as WebP/AVIF at mobile width with fetchpriority="high", drop the slideshow for one static hero, lazy-load everything below it, and defer hCaptcha (Shopify attaches it to the footer email signup) until someone uses the form, if the theme allows. Deduplicate the mega-menu (for example “PARTS - Steering” appears 4 times) and audit GTM tags.

04On-page SEOSite Health & Technical SEO

F-09

The homepage’s title is the brand name twice, with no description and no H1

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

The title tag is the strongest on-page signal and the blue link people click. Bing shows it word for word. The Open Graph description (used when the link is shared) is also just the brand name, and the page has no H1 at all.

<title>AZ Turn &amp; Burn RC — AZ Turn &amp; Burn RC</title> <meta name="description"> → missing <h1> → none (0 on page) og:description = "AZ Turn &amp; Burn RC"
FixTitle: “RC Hobby Shop & Indoor RC Playground in Surprise, AZ | AZ Turn & Burn RC”. Description: one sentence covering the store, playground, repairs and events, with 4.8★ from 400+ reviews. Add a single visible H1 above the slideshow.
F-10

Most category pages have no description, and 63% of their images have no alt text

MediumEffort: MediumImpact: Medium

Of 60 sampled collections, 51 had no meta description and 1,780 of 2,846 images had no alt text. Of 120 sampled products, 43 (36%) had no meta description, the median page had 82 words, and 37% of images lacked alt text.

FixWrite descriptions for the top 50 collections by revenue first (brand + vehicle type + “in stock in Surprise, AZ”). Turn on alt text from product titles in the theme so every product image gets a meaningful default.
F-11

Two key pages have 14 H1 headings each

LowEffort: LowImpact: Low

The Sandbox & Crawler Playground page and the WORC racing page each use 14 <h1> tags (one of them empty), so every subheading claims to be the page’s main topic.

FixKeep one H1 per page and demote the rest to H2 and H3. This is a two-minute change in the page editor.

Google has to guess that this is a physical store with a playground and events

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

Products are marked up well (Product + Offer with price and stock on every sampled page). But no page carries LocalBusiness / Store markup (address, hours, geo, rating), there is no Event markup for the ten-event crawler series or Bash Fest, and the playground passes have no Offer markup. The one site-wide block even double-encodes the brand name.

{"@type":"WebSite","name":"AZ Turn &amp;amp; Burn RC"} ← the only homepage schema Missing: Store/LocalBusiness · Event · Offer (passes) · FAQPage
FixAdd a Store (HobbyShop) block site-wide with the exact GBP NAP, both sets of hours, geo and sameAs links. Add Event markup to every competition and Bash Fest, and Offer markup for passes. Fix the “&amp;” entity. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test.

06AI search (AEO / GEO)AEO/GEO AI Search Optimization

F-13

AI recommends them as a store, not as a place to play, party or race

HighEffort: MediumImpact: High

We asked Google AI Mode three questions a West Valley customer might ask (full answers below). Turn & Burn is named first for “best RC shop”. It is missing entirely when a parent asks for indoor things to do in Surprise, and it appears only as a parts store, under the tracks, when a racer asks where to race.

The site gives AI little to quote: no FAQ content, no blog or guides (zero posts in the sitemap) and no Event data. The llms.txt file is Shopify’s generic agent instructions and says nothing about the store, playground, hours or events.

FixPublish answer-shaped pages: “Indoor RC Playground in Surprise: prices, hours, what to bring”, “RC birthday parties: packages and FAQ”, and a monthly crawler-series results page. Put the key facts (price, hours, ages, address) in the first two sentences, in plain text AI can lift.

07Content & credibility (E-E-A-T)Website Design & Hosting

F-14

Copywriting draft text is live on the Indoor Crawling page

HighEffort: LowImpact: Medium

The page includes two versions of its intro, with the editor’s note between them still published:

…Come find out at AZ Turn & Burn RC. Or, if you want something that's more exciting for social media: Conquer Arizona's Ultimate Indoor RC Crawling Experience! …
Found on: azturnandburn.com/pages/indoor-crawling
FixDelete the note and pick one version. Then read every page once for similar leftovers. This kind of slip is exactly what makes readers, and AI quality systems, trust a page less.
F-15

Big claims with no proof, and a Gmail contact address

MediumEffort: LowImpact: Medium

The site and ads say “Arizona’s #1 RC Superstore”, “the largest RC Store”, “Arizona’s Largest RC Inventory”, “the fastest growing RC Hobby store in the west” and “the Southwest’s premier destination”. None is backed by a number. Meanwhile the real proof (402 reviews, 20,000+ items, a 10-event competition series, university halftime shows) is scattered or missing. Event inquiries go to a @gmail.com address.

FixSwap superlatives for specifics: “20,000+ parts and kits online, 4.8★ from 400+ Google reviews”. Add named staff bios with RC credentials, photos of the real shop floor, and a domain email such as events@azturnandburn.com.
F-16

Accessibility scores 75: contrast, link names and tap targets

LowEffort: MediumImpact: Low

Lighthouse flags low color contrast, links and icons with no accessible name, undersized tap targets, iframes without titles and dialogs without labels. These overlap with usability on phones, where most local searches happen.

FixTheme-level fixes: label icon links (“Facebook”, “Cart”), give the Maps iframe a title, raise button text contrast, and space footer links 24 px apart.

08Email newsletter & retentionEmail Newsletters & Retention

F-17

They collect emails, but give people few reasons to join the list

MediumEffort: LowImpact: High

The only sign-up is a generic footer box repeated on every page, plus back-in-stock alerts on product pages. The playground, parties and events pages, where the most engaged families and racers land, have no sign-up of their own, and the crawler series asks people to email a Gmail address. We can’t see what subscribers receive or how often; that’s the shop’s own data.

A newsletter is the one channel the shop fully owns. Every sale, restock, comp night and Bash Fest can reach people who already buy, which is how first-time visitors become regulars and how each customer’s lifetime value grows without paying for the same customer twice.

Footer (every page) "Join our email list! Expert Insights, Deals & More!" Product pages back-in-stock alerts (notify-me.io) Playground · Events · Parties no dedicated sign-up Crawler series "Email us for more info: azturnandburnrc@gmail.com"
Found on: azturnandburn.com homepage, product pages, and the playground, events and parties pages
FixGive the list a reason to exist: “Get monthly crawler results, playground deals and restock alerts.” Add QR sign-ups at playground check-in and at every competition, a welcome email with a first-visit playground offer, a monthly newsletter built around the event calendar, and win-back emails for customers who haven’t visited in 90 days. Track list growth and promo redemptions.

09 · Method & limits

How we checked, so you can too.

No logins to their accounts, no private data. Just public pages and free tools.

What we did

  • Crawled the live sitemap (21,494 URLs) and analyzed a random sample of 192 pages: homepage, all 9 content pages, 60 collections and 120 products.
  • Checked 80 more random collections through Shopify’s public products feed for emptiness.
  • Ran Lighthouse 12 three times in mobile emulation and once on desktop.
  • Read the Google Business Profile, Maps listing and review topics, and ran 17 Google searches, a 7-point Maps grid and 3 AI Mode prompts.
  • Checked Bing, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Waze and MapQuest listings for name, address and phone.
  • Compared five competitor homepages with the same crawler.

What to keep in mind

  • Google results were run from a signed-in browser in the Phoenix West Valley and are personalized to that area.
  • Lighthouse numbers are lab data. Google’s real-user field data API was unavailable on the day.
  • We had no access to Search Console, Analytics or the GBP dashboard, so secondary categories, impressions and calls are unknown to us.
  • Sample-based figures (empty collections, out-of-stock share) are measured on the sample. Site-wide totals are estimates and labeled as such.
  • Everything reflects September 21, 2026. The shop may have fixed some of it since, and we would be glad to hear it.
