What is one regular customer worth to your hobby shop?

A first sale is nice. A regular who comes back twice a month for two years is the business. Put in your own numbers and see what one regular is worth, and what it’s worth spending to win one.

How it’s calculated

Plain arithmetic on the numbers you enter. No industry averages are assumed.

Sales per month = average sale × visits per month
Gross profit per year = sales per month × 12 × gross margin
Lifetime value = sales per month × months they stay × gross margin
Year one from new regulars = each month’s new regulars × the months left in the year they’re active × monthly gross profit

Gross profit is before rent, payroll and other overhead. It is the right number for comparing against what it costs to win or keep a customer.

Three ways shops turn one-time buyers into regulars

  1. Capture a way to reach them at the counter. Repair tickets and race-day sign-ups are the easiest place. How to do it at repair intake.
  2. Follow up within 48 hours with a next date attached. A thank-you plus the next race day or clinic.
  3. Be the shop they find again. A complete Google Business Profile with fresh photos and reviews keeps you first when they search for parts. Start with these 5 free tools.
