Field Audit No. 002Independent · not a clientGoodyear, AZ

AZRC Hobbies owns Goodyear search. Its website is quietly working against it.

Customers love this shop, Google ranks it first around Goodyear, and AI assistants recommend it by name. But its RC Boats page is hidden from Google, there’s no way to join an email list, and every page title and heading is working against the shop. Here is everything we found, with receipts, and the 90-day plan we would run.

How to read this. AZRC Hobbies did not commission this audit, did not pay to be featured, and has not reviewed it. Everything comes from public pages, Google, Bing, directories and standard tools on September 21, 2026. Grades are our editorial judgment. Figures are measured, and where we extrapolate from a sample we say so. See Method to check any of it yourself.

01 · Executive summary

A shop customers trust, on a site that undersells it.

AZRC doesn’t have a reputation problem. It has a handful of settings and missing pages that cost it visibility and repeat business.

The verdict

The hard parts are done. AZRC holds 4.8★ from 215 Google reviews, ranks #1 for ten of the eighteen local searches we tested, tops Google Maps across the south and west Valley, and Google AI Mode names it first for the best RC shop near Goodyear.

The gaps are self-inflicted and cheap to fix. The Boats category is set to noindex. The site has no newsletter sign-up at all. Every title repeats the brand, “Shopping cart” is the main heading of every page, and nothing in the code says this is a store with an address and hours.

Meanwhile Turn & Burn is buying the top spot on Maps right on top of AZRC’s storefront, and leads the north Valley with nearly twice the reviews.

The three moves that matter most:

  1. Unblock and fix the basics: remove the Boats noindex, repair the title template, add descriptions, one real H1 and Store schema.
  2. Start an email list: a footer sign-up, a QR card at the register and a monthly newsletter, so walk-ins become regulars.
  3. Give services and people a page: repairs and custom builds, a real About page, and GBP posts that show the team at work.

03 · SWOT analysis

Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats.

Every point links back to a measured finding in this audit. Nothing here is a hunch.

SStrengthsInternal

  • Trusted service: 4.8★ on 215 Google reviews. Google’s review topics lead with “knowledgeable staff” (119) and even “no pressure sales” (6).
  • Owns Goodyear search: #1 for “rc hobby shop goodyear az”, “rc car repair goodyear az”, “traxxas dealer goodyear az”, “rc hobby shop west valley” and six more.
  • Owns the south and west Valley on Maps: #1 at all eight points we checked from Glendale to Buckeye and Estrella.
  • AI already recommends them: Google AI Mode names AZRC first for the best RC shop near Goodyear and for where to buy RC boats, and quotes their own “Parts Wall” copy.
  • Clean, consistent listings: the same address, phone and hours on the site, Google, Yelp, Bing and MapQuest.
  • Solid basics: desktop performance 95, accessibility 94, alt text on every sampled image, product microdata with price and stock.

WWeaknessesInternal

  • Boats is noindexed: the one category written for local search is the one Google is told to ignore.
  • No email capture: not a single newsletter sign-up on 5,800+ pages.
  • Title and heading template: “AZRC Hobbies - AZRC Hobbies” on the homepage, the brand twice on every title, and “Shopping cart” as the H1 of every page.
  • No business schema: nothing tells Google, in code, that this is a store with an address and hours.
  • Slow on phones: 14.0 s mobile LCP (lab median), led by a Gundam blind-box image.
  • Stale story: the About page still says “a new hobby shop”, and repairs and custom builds have no page.

OOpportunitiesExternal

  • RC boats: AI already sends boat buyers to AZRC, and Turn & Burn ranks #1 for “rc boats phoenix”. Unblocking one page could win the category.
  • A newsletter from zero: 215 happy reviewers, Vanquish news, crawl meets and new arrivals are ready-made reasons to email, and the fastest way to turn walk-ins into regulars and raise what each customer is worth.
  • Service pages: “rc car repair goodyear az” is already a #1 ranking. A real repairs and custom-builds page can turn it into booked work.
  • The north Valley: AZRC is #2 around Surprise, Peoria and Sun City. More reviews that mention those cities, plus GBP posts, can close the gap.
  • Phoenix-wide searches: absent for “rc hobby shop phoenix” and “best rc shop arizona”, where the basics (titles, schema, descriptions) matter most.

TThreatsExternal

  • Turn & Burn’s ads sit on top: their sponsored pin appears above AZRC at every point we checked, including AZRC’s own storefront.
  • A review gap: Turn & Burn has 402 Google reviews to AZRC’s 215, and wins the north Valley on Maps.
  • Paid clutter: Hobby Lobby buys the same “rc hobby shop” searches on Maps.
  • Indoor venues: Diamondback RC Park (5.0★) and Turn & Burn’s playground win the “where to drive or race” questions AZRC can’t answer yet.
  • AI answers shift: today’s first-place mentions rest on thin site content that a competitor with better pages could displace.

01Google Business Profile & MapsLocal SEO, Maps & GBP

F-01

A competitor’s ad sits above AZRC in its own backyard

HighEffort: MediumImpact: High

We searched “rc hobby shop” on Google Maps from twelve West Valley points. AZRC is the top organic result at eight of them, yet the first thing shown at every point, including directly on top of AZRC’s storefront, is a sponsored pin for AZ Turn & Burn RC (“Arizona’s Largest RC Inventory”, “The Best RC Store in Arizona”). A Hobby Lobby ad usually follows.

# Google Maps, rc hobby shop, centered on 15671 W Roosevelt St 1. AZ Turn and Burn RC Sponsored 2. Hobby Lobby Sponsored 3. AZRC Hobbies ← top organic result 4. AZ Turn and Burn RC
Found on: Google Maps, 12 viewpoints across the West Valley, September 21, 2026
FixTest a small local search campaign on Google Ads for the Goodyear, Avondale and Buckeye area, so the shop people are already looking at is also the first pin they see. Measure calls and direction requests from the ad before scaling.
F-02

The profile says “the West Valley’s only RC shop”, and hasn’t posted

MediumEffort: LowImpact: Medium

The owner description reads “The West Valley’s only and premier RC Hobby Shop”, but AZ Turn & Burn RC in Surprise is also a West Valley RC shop, and Google shows both side by side. The Maps listing shows no owner posts, only “Updates by visitors”, and the Products carousel is generic (“Play Vehicles”, “Hardware Fasteners”).

FixRewrite the description around what is provably true: “Goodyear’s full-service RC shop: 4,700+ parts in stock, repairs and custom builds, Vanquish dealer.” Post weekly (arrivals, crawl meets, builds) and curate 10 to 15 hero products.
F-03

Second place north of Bell Road, where Turn & Burn has twice the reviews

MediumEffort: MediumImpact: Medium

AZRC drops to #2 behind AZ Turn & Burn RC at Surprise, North Surprise, North Peoria and Sun City. With 215 reviews against their 402, distance is only part of the story: prominence and relevance signals need to catch up too.

FixAsk for reviews every day at the counter with a simple, genuine ask (a QR card at the register), never requesting specific content — Google’s review policies don’t allow soliciting particular details — and reply to every review with specifics.

02Citations & listingsLocal Citations & Directories

F-04

Listings are consistent, but Bing tells a thinner story

LowEffort: LowImpact: Medium

Good news first: the address, phone and hours match on the site, Google, Yelp, Bing and MapQuest, which is rarer than it should be. But Bing’s panel shows 5/5 from 8 reviews rather than Google’s 215, and Microsoft Copilot answers local questions from Bing’s data.

FixClaim or verify Bing Places (it can import the Google profile) and Apple Business Connect, and add the same description, photos and categories to both.

03Technical SEO & performanceSite Health & Technical SEO

F-05

The Boats category is telling Google not to index it

CriticalEffort: LowImpact: High

The /boats/ page is the only category we found with a locally optimized title (“RC Boats in Goodyear, AZ”). It also carries a noindex tag, which tells Google to leave it out of search. Every other main category is indexable. Meanwhile Google’s AI already recommends AZRC for RC boats, and Turn & Burn ranks #1 for “rc boats phoenix”.

GET /boats/ <title>RC Boats in Goodyear, AZ | AZRC Hobbies - AZRC Hobbies</title> <meta name="robots" content="noindex"/> # /air/, /cars-trucks/, /batteries/, /maintenance/ → noodp,noydir (indexable)
Found on: azrchobbies.com/boats/
FixIn the Lightspeed category settings for Boats, turn off “hide from search engines” (or the equivalent noindex toggle), then request indexing in Google Search Console. Check the other categories while there.
F-06

Phones wait about 14 seconds for the main image, and it’s a Gundam box

HighEffort: MediumImpact: High

Three Lighthouse mobile runs gave a median performance score of 58 and Largest Contentful Paint of 14.0 s (runs varied from 5.9 to 14.8 s). Render-blocking files cost about 1.2 s. The largest element is a product tile for a Bandai Gundam blind box, the first product on the homepage of an RC shop. Desktop is fast (95).

LCP element <img … alt="Bandai Bandai QMSV Mini Zeta Gundam…"> Mobile perf 58 · LCP 14.0 s · TBT 460 ms (median of 3) Desktop perf 95 · LCP 1.3 s Savings render-blocking 1,230 ms · images 81 KiB · unused JS 79 KiB
Found on: Lighthouse 12, mobile emulation, 3 runs (lab data)
FixLead the homepage with an RC hero (a crawler or the Vanquish H10) as a small WebP with priority loading, and defer non-critical scripts and styles in the theme.
F-07

A 2-second crawl delay slows Bing, the index behind Copilot

LowEffort: LowImpact: Medium

robots.txt asks crawlers to wait 2 seconds between requests. Google ignores that line, but Bing honors it. At 5,831 URLs, that’s at least 3.2 hours for Bing to recrawl the site once, so price, stock and new-product changes reach Bing, and Copilot, slowly.

User-agent: * Crawl-delay: 2
FixRemove the crawl-delay line if Lightspeed lets you edit robots.txt (or ask their support). Cloudflare already protects the site from abusive bots.
F-08

Small data slips: a duplicate Arrma page, doubled brand names, an invalid language tag

LowEffort: LowImpact: Low

Arrma has two brand pages, /brands/arrma/ and a misspelled /brands/arrama/, which splits its products and signals across two URLs. A battery subcategory is spelled “e-flight” (the brand is E-flite). Product headings repeat the brand (“Bandai Bandai…”, “Vanquish Vanquish Products H10…”). The page’s language is declared as lang="us", which isn’t a valid code, and Lighthouse flags it.

FixMerge /brands/arrama/ into /brands/arrma/ with a 301 redirect, rename the e-flight subcategory to e-flite, strip the duplicated brand from product titles in the feed, and set the store language to en-US.

04On-page SEOSite Health & Technical SEO

F-09

Every title says the brand twice, and the homepage has no description

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

The title template appends “- AZRC Hobbies” to a title that already ends in the brand, so the homepage reads “AZRC Hobbies - AZRC Hobbies” and even the Boats page ends “| AZRC Hobbies - AZRC Hobbies”. With no meta description, Google writes the homepage snippet from whatever text comes first, and today that starts with a price.

<title>AZRC Hobbies - AZRC Hobbies</title> <meta name="description"> → missing # Google snippet for “AZRC Hobbies Goodyear AZ” "$899.99. 4,700+ RC parts in stock · Goodyear, AZ. The West Valley's Parts Wall…"
FixHomepage title: “RC Hobby Shop in Goodyear, AZ: Parts, Repairs & Custom Builds | AZRC Hobbies”. Remove the duplicate suffix from the theme’s title template. Description: “Goodyear’s RC shop with 4,700+ parts in stock, repairs and custom builds. 4.8★ from 200+ Google reviews.”
F-10

“Shopping cart” is the main heading of every page

MediumEffort: LowImpact: Medium

The cart drawer is marked up as an H1 on every page. The homepage’s other H1 is the Gundam product, and 52 of 89 sampled category pages carry 15 H1s, one per product tile, so no page states its real topic.

FixIn the theme, change the cart drawer title and product-tile names to non-heading elements, and give each page one H1 (on the homepage: “Goodyear’s RC hobby shop”).
F-11

Category pages: no descriptions, and a dozen duplicate titles

MediumEffort: MediumImpact: Medium

83 of 89 category pages have no meta description, and 12 share a title with another page (“Electronics - AZRC Hobbies” and “Kits - AZRC Hobbies” each appear three times, for cars, air and boats). Brand pages average 82 words.

FixPut the parent in every subcategory title (“RC Car Electronics”, “RC Boat Kits”), write a two-sentence description for the top 20 categories, and add a short intro to the top 15 brand pages.

05Structured dataSite Health & Technical SEO

F-12

Products are marked up; the store itself isn’t

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

Product pages carry schema.org microdata (name, SKU, brand, price, stock). But we found no JSON-LD on any of 247 pages, so there is no Store or LocalBusiness block (address, hours, geo, rating), no Organization and no breadcrumbs. The “custom build” service is modeled as a $0.00 product with a 0-out-of-5 rating.

application/ld+json blocks found: 0 of 247 pages # /azrc/ Custom Build Vanquish H10 · $0.00 · "The rating of this product is 0 out of 5"
FixAdd a Store (HobbyShop) JSON-LD block to the theme with the exact Google NAP, hours, geo and sameAs links, plus BreadcrumbList. Move custom builds to a normal content page instead of a $0 product.

06AI search (AEO / GEO)AEO/GEO AI Search Optimization

F-13

AI likes them already, but there’s little on the site for it to cite

MediumEffort: MediumImpact: High

Google AI Mode names AZRC first for the best RC shop near Goodyear and for buying RC boats, and quotes the homepage’s “Parts Wall” copy. That shows plain on-page facts get picked up. But there is no llms.txt, no FAQ content, no guides and no page describing repairs or builds, so AI has only the homepage banner and reviews to work from.

FixPublish a few answer-shaped pages: “RC repairs & custom builds in Goodyear: what we fix, turnaround, pricing guide”, “RC boats: what to buy first”, and a store FAQ (hours, parking, trade-ins, special orders). Lead each with the facts in the first two sentences.

07Content & credibility (E-E-A-T)Website Design & Hosting

F-14

The About page still calls the shop “new”, five years in

MediumEffort: LowImpact: Medium

The About page says AZRC is “a new hobby shop… serving the area since November of 2021”. At about 100 words, it names no one, even though reviewers praise staff by name (“Allen and staff provided top-tier service”). The team’s “combined 45+ years of experience” is mentioned but never shown.

"AZRC Hobbies is a new hobby shop located in the heart of Phoenix’s West Valley, proudly serving the area since November of 2021."
Found on: azrchobbies.com/service/about/
FixRewrite it as a real story: who runs the shop, their racing and building backgrounds, photos of the counter and repair bench, the Vanquish dealership, and what “#theUltimateRCExperience” means in practice.
F-15

Repairs and custom builds, a real differentiator, have no page

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

“Full service shop, performing everything from simple repairs to custom builds” appears once, on the About page. The shop already ranks #1 for “rc car repair goodyear az”, but there is no page to land that search on, list what they fix, or take a booking.

FixCreate a Repairs & Custom Builds page with services, sample turnaround times, a photo gallery of builds and a simple request form. Link it from the menu and the Google profile’s services.

08Email newsletter & retentionEmail Newsletters & Retention

F-16

There’s no way to join an email list, anywhere on the site

HighEffort: LowImpact: High

We found no newsletter sign-up on the homepage, categories or product pages. The only “Sign up” is for a customer account. That means every Vanquish restock, new arrival, sale and crawl meet has to be discovered on social media, and walk-ins who love the shop have no way to hear from it again.

Email is the one audience a shop owns outright. A simple monthly newsletter, plus event and restock announcements, is how first-time buyers become regulars, how events fill up, and how each customer’s lifetime value grows without paying to reach them again.

Newsletter / email sign-up forms found: 0 Header: "Sign up / Log in" ← customer account only
Found on: azrchobbies.com homepage, category and product templates
FixAdd a newsletter sign-up to the footer and checkout (through the theme’s newsletter block or a form from your email platform), put a QR sign-up card at the register and at every crawl meet, send a welcome email with a small first-visit offer, and start a monthly newsletter: new arrivals, restocks, builds of the month and upcoming meets.

09 · Method & limits

How we checked, so you can too.

No logins to their accounts, no private data. Just public pages and free tools.

What we did

  • Crawled the live sitemap (5,831 URLs) and analyzed 247 pages: every category, service and tag page, 30 random brand pages and 120 random products.
  • Ran Lighthouse 12 three times in mobile emulation and once on desktop.
  • Read the Google Business Profile, Maps listing, hours and review topics, and ran 18 Google searches, a 12-point Maps grid and 3 AI Mode prompts.
  • Checked Bing, Yelp, Facebook, MapQuest and Apple Maps for name, address, phone and hours.
  • Compared five competitor homepages with the same crawler.

What to keep in mind

  • Google results were run from a signed-in browser in the Phoenix West Valley and are personalized to that area.
  • Lighthouse numbers are lab data and varied widely between runs (mobile LCP 5.9 to 14.8 s). We report the median.
  • We had no access to Search Console, Analytics, Lightspeed or the GBP dashboard, so impressions, sales and email data are unknown to us.
  • Everything reflects September 21, 2026. The shop may have fixed some of it since, and we would be glad to hear it.
